Making Gold on Connected Realms: How Shared Auction Houses Work

Connected Realms merge two or more standard realms into one shared server behind the scenes - same guilds, same trade chat, and critically, one single Auction House instead of two separate ones. If your realm has ever been connected to another, you've been trading on a combined market this whole time, whether you've noticed or not.

That combined market is exactly what makes connected realms worth understanding as a gold maker. A bigger, merged Auction House behaves differently from a small standalone one - more listings, more competition, but also more liquidity and more windows to make gold that simply don't exist on a tiny, isolated realm.

Is your realm connected?

For US and European realms, check the lists below - if your realm isn't listed under "Connected Realms" for your region, it isn't connected to any other realm. Those two regional lists are current, not a stale historical snapshot, and include an explicit "Not Connected" list you can cross-check against directly.

The Oceanic, Brazil, Korean, Taiwanese, and Chinese groupings further down are older reference data and may be missing more recent connections - for those regions specifically, the always-accurate check is your own character select screen (a connected cluster shows as Realm-A and Realm-B) or Blizzard's realm status page.

Why a shared Auction House actually matters for gold

More listings means more mispriced items to catch. A standalone low-population realm might have three of an item listed at wildly different prices because there simply aren't enough sellers to compete the price down to a "real" market rate. A connected realm cluster has enough sellers that a genuine market price actually forms - which also means genuine outliers from that price are easier to spot and flip. Fewer, but more meaningful, sniping opportunities.

Crafting materials see steadier demand. More active raiders and crafters pulling from the same material pool means less feast-or-famine pricing on consumables, flasks, and crafting reagents - useful if you're gathering and selling raw materials rather than flipping finished goods.

Guild and cross-character logistics get easier. Since connected realms share the same guild roster pool, you can invite/be invited across what used to be a separate server, mail items between characters on either side of the connection, and coordinate crafting orders with a much larger pool of crafters than a single realm would ever have.

Watch for realm connections before they happen. Blizzard typically announces upcoming connections a few weeks ahead on the realm status forums. If you know your realm is about to merge into a bigger cluster, that's a real, time-limited opportunity: prices on your current (smaller) realm often haven't adjusted to what the combined market will look like yet. Stockpiling underpriced raw materials or common consumables shortly before a merge - then selling once the bigger population's demand kicks in - is a legitimate, low-effort way to profit from a connection most other players on your realm won't be paying attention to.

Practical tips once you're on a connected realm

  • Check both "sides" of your history. If you were on realm A before it merged with realm B, your gut sense of "what this item usually sells for" is now stale - the combined market can sit meaningfully higher or lower than what you remembered.
  • Undercut math changes. More competing sellers means the 1-copper-undercut race matters more, and margins per item tend to shrink slightly even as total sales volume goes up. Selling in bulk stacks rather than singles often works out better on a bigger connected AH.
  • Neutral-faction trading still isn't automatic. A realm connection merges same-faction Auction Houses together - it does not merge Alliance and Horde into a shared AH. You still need a neutral auction house (goblin-run, when available) to trade across factions.
  • Mythic raid lockouts historically followed the same rule as guilds - connected realms share the same lockout pool for mythic progression prior to the Hall of Fame closing for a given tier, worth knowing if you're coordinating a raid team across what used to be two separate realms.

China

This region's connections are extensive and change often - use Blizzard's China realm status page for the current, accurate grouping.

The bottom line

A connected realm's shared Auction House isn't just a technical curiosity - it's a bigger, more liquid market with real gold-making implications: steadier crafting material demand, more genuine mispricing to snipe, and a real (if narrow) window to profit around the connection event itself if you catch it early. For US and EU realms, the Connected/Not Connected lists above are current - if you're not listed under Connected, you're on a standalone realm. For every other region, verify your own realm's status in-game before assuming either way.
