Getting a fresh character from level 10 all the way to 90 sounds like a huge undertaking, but the two halves of that journey work completely differently — and knowing that changes how you should approach the whole thing. Levels 10 through 80 happen in Chromie Time, Blizzard's scaled-content system that lets you level through any past expansion's zones at a consistent pace. Levels 80 through 90 happen in current Midnight content, which we already cover in detail in The Fastest Way to Level 80-90 in Midnight. This guide focuses on the first half — getting through 10-80 as efficiently as possible — and ties the two together into one continuous plan.
Picking a Chromie Time timeline actually matters
When you create a character (or use the Chromie Time NPC to change an existing one's leveling content), you're choosing which expansion's zones you'll level through from roughly level 10 to 80. Not all of them are equally fast — some expansions pack far more quest density per zone than others, and quest density is what determines how quickly you climb levels.
Legion is consistently one of the strongest picks. Beyond its own zones just having a lot of quests, choosing the Legion timeline also causes classic Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor zones to spawn Legion Invasion points — timed world-quest-style events that hand out a large chunk of bonus experience for a relatively small time investment. This turns otherwise-ordinary zones like Duskwood and Loch Modan into genuinely efficient leveling stops, not just nostalgic detours.
Duskwood and Loch Modan: underrated leveling zones
Both of these zones have unusually good quest density and a lot of overlapping quest chains that can be picked up in almost any order, which matters more than it sounds like — it means you can hold onto several completed-but-not-turned-in quests at once and batch your turn-ins together instead of running back and forth constantly.
A practical routine that works well:
- Work through Duskwood's quest hubs, picking up everything as you go rather than turning things in immediately.
- Do the same through Loch Modan.
- Batch your turn-ins together at natural stopping points, rather than interrupting your questing flow every time one quest completes.
If you're not sure you'll get quite enough experience from these two zones alone to hit your target level, Elwynn Forest is a reliable backup with plenty of leftover quests to fill the gap — and The Grudge Pit is a solid spot to land your final turn-ins if you end up needing a small top-off before moving on.
Time your XP buffs around your turn-in batching
This is the single most impactful habit here, and it applies well beyond just these two zones: if you're holding a temporary experience buff — a potion, a food buff, a holiday bonus — try to line up your big quest turn-ins to land while it's active, rather than turning things in the moment they're ready.
Draught of Ten Lands is a great example of why this matters. It grants +10% experience (plus a small stat boost) for a full hour, but it can only be used at level 49 or below — so it's specifically a tool for exactly this stretch of leveling, not something you carry into Midnight content. The play is: hold off on turning in a stack of Duskwood/Loch Modan quests as you approach level 49, pop the Draught right before you start turning them in, and let that hour of +10% experience apply to as many big turn-ins as you can fit into it.
The underlying principle generalizes to any timed XP buff you come across: batching high-value turn-ins to land inside the buff window is almost always worth more than the small amount of extra per-quest scaling you'd get from turning each one in immediately at a slightly higher level.
Don't sleep on crafting experience
If you have a profession leveled up alongside your character, doing your crafting queue before your other turn-ins (rather than saving it for last, which is the more common habit) means you get to use your new gear immediately and, if you're timing a buff like the one above, you get the crafting experience boosted by it too.
Realistic time expectations
A highly practiced, fully-optimized run can complete the 10-80 stretch in under 2 hours, and the 80-90 stretch (covered in our companion guide) in a similar amount of time on top of that — but that reflects extensive prior practice with the exact route, pre-planned consumables, and no wasted movement. If you're leveling casually while following a guide for the first time, budget considerably more than that; the real value of the tips above isn't hitting speedrun times, it's cutting out the genuinely wasted time (backtracking, forgetting an active buff, turning things in inefficiently) that slows down a normal leveling session without you noticing.
Putting it together
- Set your Chromie Time timeline to Legion before you start leveling a fresh 10-80 character.
- Level primarily through Duskwood and Loch Modan, holding turn-ins rather than doing them immediately.
- Around level 49, use a Draught of Ten Lands (or any temporary XP buff you're saving) right before a big batch of turn-ins.
- Use Elwynn Forest as backup content and The Grudge Pit as a good final turn-in spot if you're a little short.
- Once you hit 80, switch over to The Fastest Way to Level 80-90 in Midnight for the rest of the way to 90.
